place names in Leitrim

trying to read a place name in Co. Leitrim on an 1881 UK census, can anyone help?

Do you mean the word just prior to Co. Leitrim

It looks as though it ends in "ila."

The only place mentioned ending with those letters on the IreAtlas site is Drumnafinnila.

Thanks, yes that's the word.
The first word I, am assuming, is "Ireland" and the "Co. Leitrim" is clear.
"Drumnafinnila" is a bit long to fit in unless there is a local abbreviation or the pronounciation fooled the census enumerator in Weymouth, England!
I did get a hit for a search on my great grandmother's name, Mary Mitchell, on the ".irishgenealogy" site which directs me to the Leitrim Genealogy Centre.
The year of birth (1862) and spelling is right so I suppose I need to risk the £14 fee. The result should give the place of birth, assuming it's the right Mary Mitchell.

I'm wondering why £14.

I spoke to the General Register Office (Oifig An Ard-Chláraitheora) in Roscommon a couple of days ago.

Their fee is €10. http://www.groireland.ie/fees.htm

I hope I'm wrong but I understood that central birth registration in Ireland only started in 1864. (Two years too late for me)
The record I would get from Leitrim would be a baptism record.

Try searching different ways by townland and parish 'hill', 'ile', etc. using search for somewhere in word at www.thecore.com/seanruad

Only just seen your enquiry. It looks rather straightforward: Mohill, Co Leitrim.

For the final "ill", compare the end of Mary Mitchell's name on the same line of the enumerator's sheet.  The initial "M" of Mohill is not as complete as other capital Ms on the sheet - but possibly the enumerator was mistakenly writing Nohill.

I have spent some time comparing all the "ll"s and capital "M" s on the census page and I think you are right.

I have searched on Griffiths and there is only one Mitchell shown in Mohill, wrong first name but could be father/grandfather.
Anyway I will proceed on the assumption that this is a connection.

What do you mean by "only one Mitchell in Mohill"?  Were you only looking at the town itself?  There were quite a few Mitchells in the area if you consider the Parish of Mohill which stretches well beyond the town itself.

Are you anywhere near a Mormon genealogical library?  If so you can order the Mohill and area parish records on microfilm and look through for your people.
