Broomfield - Roberts/Robertson - Hogarth
« on: Wednesday 19 September 07 18:47 BST (UK) »
Hoping someone can help me or point me in the right direction.
Thomas Broomfield m. Helen Roberts/Robertson at Chirnside in 1776.
1. I can't find the births of :
Thomas Broomfield c1744, possibly Chirnside area;
Helen Roberts/Robertson c1744 [age was given as 77 on M.I. Chirnside,1821.]
[Their children were Jean, Grace and John Broomfield.]
From the Chirnside M.I.  I know that Helen's parents were David Roberts/Robertson and Jean Hogarth who were married at Mordington, Berwick in 1739. At his death David was late gardener at Spenc Mains.
I will be very pleased with any help or information.
Rae

Hi,

Not of much help, but there were 2 families of Broomfields in the 1851 census at Chirnside.

William age 41 Dry Stone Dyke Builder born Eccles.

David age 47 Mason, Chelsea pensioner  born Chirnside.

Can't find a Spence Mains on any recent map and my wife can't place it either.
As you say according to the MI at Chirnside you are going back to 1699 at the latest, probably one of those place vanished in history, I take it that you got the MI's off the pre 1855 book.
Scottish Borders - Wait Binnie Aitchison Whitelaw Sligo Fairgrieve Fairburn Robinson Plenderlieth Robson Broadwith Park Dickie Kerr Wilson Lockie Oliver Brown Scott.
Ross & Cromarty, Forsyth Bain.
Kincardine, Forsyth Lownie.
Staffordshire - Smith Steele Hallmark Colclough Dunn Booth Frost.
Shropshire - Tennant.
Sheffield - Savage England Corn Trippett.
Lincolnshire - Savage Smalley Allitt Booth Addison Kirton.
Huntingdonshire - Corn Connington Randall Baxter Booth .

Thank you again for replying.
I will keep those two families in my notes just in case they fit in anywhere.
As you say there doesn't seem to be any Spence Mains in Chirnside area and the only one I can find about that time would be near Melrose. Perhaps I will find out more if I fit in a visit to Edinburgh. The list is growing ever longer now that I have traced so far back.
Yes, I do have the M.I.'s for Berwickshire, the Eastern Counties which has been so good for tracing many of our ancestors.
Best wishes,
Rae

Not much help, but I have read in an autobiography by Catherine Helen Spence (1825-1910), that Chirnside was originally called Spence's Mains. I think the name was the family estate before c1750.

Thanks, Lothian. That is an interesting bit of information. Will see what I can find out with that in mind.

Hello,

Sorry to butt into your post (as I haven't traced back my Broomfield relatives that far) But I was wondering if maybe our Broomfield family's connect in some way.

William Broomfield Married Agnes Melrose (Nov 14, 1839 Hutton, Berwick, Scotland)

there 3 children that I have been able to find are

Margaret Broomfield (born 1841 in Hutton, Berwick, Scotland)
Elizabeth Broomfield (born 1843 in Hutton, Berwick, Scotland)
Darling Broomfield (Jan 1847 in Hutton, Berwick, Scotland)

Darling Broomfield is my Great Great Grandmother

Any information/help would be appreciated

Hi,
Sorry, I don't have any of  these names in my tree. Perhaps there is a link somewhere but can't see it at the moment.
Have found another couple of children for you though:
William Broomfield born 02 AUG 1855   Bunkle And Preston, Berwick, Scotland, parents William Broomfield and Agnes Melrose
David Broomfield born 29 APR 1857   Swinton And Simprin, Berwick, Scotland
Both of these are on the LDS website and are from 'records from the locality', not submitted.

Hello, My name is Mona Broomfield from Kansas. Not sure how old this post is. Thomas Broomfield and Helen Robertson are my 4 great grandparents. Their children were David, George, Grizel, Jean and John. I am currently researching this line and interested in sharing info.
