News - City of London Cemetery
« on: Wednesday 19 September 07 19:45 BST (UK) »
Still a bit shocked to hear tonight about City of London Cemetery's proposals to re-use graves. I have a number of relatives there, could anyone summarise what the authorities intend and when? I didn't manage to catch all that was said.

The only report I can find is in yesterday's Gulf Times from Qatar for some reason  :-\

Apparently there have been changes to the law which means graves can now be reused even if the remains within the grave have to be disturbed. I can't see this being at all popular - maybe  that's why it's so hard to find details.

The Gulf Times report is at http://www.rootschat.com/links/01xo/

I heard on the radio that relatives can refuse for the graves to be re-used. So I would contact the cemetary/council to ensure your graves are not re-used.

Permission to dig up the remains would be given only if there were no objections from descendants of the dead, if they can be tracked down.

Families who object to a relative's grave being re-used will be allowed to defer the exhumation for "at least" a generation.
