old telephone numbers

is there anybody out there who knows anything about old telephone numbers (pre 1970) if glasgow is now 0141 am i right in thinking in 1968 041 would have been glasgow also if mar followed by 4 numbers was maryhill wot could str followed by 4 numbers be ?

Hi Kim

STR would translate to the apha on the dials - I think it would be 787 and I think you had to go through the operator for long distance and ask for Glasgow STR/787 etc.

It might be St Rollox but that's just using areas that I know of. Someone might recall Glasgow of the late 1960s/1970s.

ancestry has old british phone books 1880 to 1984
but you need to put in a name not a number
but it will give you an address
i dont know if this would be of any help to you ?

iv just tried old directories but the name im looking for(clark) is nearly has hard as looking for a smith or jones it is so common why could i not been born with something relly unusual as a surname

I've just been through the Glasgow ones - skipping the Mrs. and I can't see any with STR 

Are you sure she didn't marry.

I presume that you've checked BT online directory, just in case. There's also 192.com but you might have to pay  And you don't know if she's alive or not
