Well I went to see Anne ... she was over the moon with the info !  She's been on this FH lark for 40 years ... her researches and records are an example to us all ... but you've both found out things she hadn't ... and to go back to the original question, she thinks that David Kidwell must have been the brother of William ...

She hasn't any info about that will or the marriage settlement you located Debs, or the Chicester thing, Steve ... so any more info you can find out, would be useful !  No hurry ... its been pending for 40 years !    (Though my friend is in her late 70's ...)

Morning Lydart

I'll check in NDRO & see what I can find. The Chichester documents might be there in copy form (the Chichesters being the main family around, its possible that some ancient antiquary extracted all the info before the family papers were carted off to Exeter!). I'm not sure I will be able to find anything there on the details of the marriage of William & Mary, but I'll check.
Would Anne like me to extract further Kidwell entries from the Register transcription? I assume if she's interested in David, she wishes to trace that line further back

Steve ... I just checked in for a quick look at something ... must dash ... but yes, anything you can find about the Kidwells from further back than about 1750ish would be good, I'm sure !

Sorry ... must run !

Hi Lydart

Called into NDRO briefly - a quick search revealed no Richard Kidwell/Mary marriage or any baptisms that could be Richard in Shirwell/Loxhore/Pilton/East Down/Bratton Fleming. I'll have to look further afield in due course.
I checked the personal names files & found that there is a copy of the David Kidwell 1791 lease at Barnstaple. Also I noted a 1731 lease naming Richard Kidwell, miller of Shirwell for land in Loxhore parish and documents relating to a William Kidwell, c1783 in Berrynarbour. Unfortunately documents aren't available 12-2 (I normally call in in my lunch hour - hence the hurried searches!) so I'll take a look when I have more time

Sounds good Steve ... I'm getting as interested in Anne's ancestors as I am in mine ... wherever they may be hiding !

Hi Lydart

Had a chance to look at the two leases today. Both are at NDRO (originals on lovely 18th century parchment!)so I presume there are the lessees copies.
They are both long and (of course) in dense legal language. Just checking for names, the David Kidwell one Jan, 19 1791 mentions as you know, Susannah Symonds aged 35 or thereabouts and John Mott of Shirwell (could be Nott) son of William Mott of Plaistow (a hamlet in the parish) aged 14 or thereabouts. No idea of a relationship (but could Susannah be the wife of David in 1841?).
The earlier one, 8 June 1731 has Richard Kidwell, miller of Shirwell leasing property in Loxhore from John Fraine, apothecary of Barnstaple (rent 20s pa). It mentions Richard's sons, William and John & his daughter, Joan/Jane.
Both David (X) and Richard (RK?) made their mark.
I'm sure they could be photocopied if Anne is interested, although they are both fairly faint, so I'm not sure what the quality would be

Wow , Steve ... you are wonderful to do all of this for Lydart's friend ...I am sure they will be excited .

I have been trying to figure out who young John Nott/Mott is , Maybe his dad William Nott/Mott married a Kidwell LOL  ::)

Also will look into Richard Kidwell and children.

thanks Steve
