JJ  is right ... or we'll all be crosseyed! I  have looked and I think it's Licenced or Licencee  not legend and and below that it looks like spirits ( not the ghoulish type  lol ) so I suspect it  says more or less what most pubs say  on their licence sign ...  :-\
So  ...a new scan  or we could just ask the ladies in front of it what it says !! ;D

Well...I got the L right... :D I suspect it's a fairly standard pub sign, but there might be a clue to where the pub is.

Gary doesn't have the original, it's in the US.

Thank you all for your input. Sadly as Chinakay has advised i don't have the original photo, it's a copy i have been sent by a relation in usa.

Sorry JJ i have no idea how to do what you have asked me to do, i only do very basic things with pictures lol. Can i do it with this scan copy i already have?

As for asking the two ladies i would love to, but both are no longer alive and the living relation has no idea where it is, all the information she gave me regarding the possible address was incorrect.

So may remain a mystery for me then. Thank you all for your help anyway.

Gary

FIRSTLY THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP. I decided that it was worth another go asking this (previously slighty stroppy lady) in america another nudge about this photo and seeing if she could increase the dpi as requested. Well low and behold email received today in a much nicer tone then last, advising me that this is what she can read on it (i assume she did as i asked and increased the box and dpi etc)........

The sign says
William John Bean
Licensed refresher of Spirits
and etc also Tabacco.
There is no address is on it.

][/color] So at long last I know that William John Bean was the licensee, but still have no idea of exactly where it was located back in 1936. So thank you to everyone who has endeavoured to try and read the detail, sorry if i have wasted your time.

Regards Gary

Well, success! You might find him yet, Gary, although the number of Fox Inns in Britain is perhaps only slightly less than the number of hounds ;D

William's dates aren't 1885-1945, are they?

Anyway, it's never a waste of time to try to solve a Rootschat mystery...that's why we're all on Rootschat ;D

Cheers,

LOL thanks China, it is going to be a bit of a needle in a haystack search. Especially as this family seem to move around a bit and the other problem being more then likely the pub from 1936 has been demolished or converted into something else, but i will keep on searching, love being a detective!!

I think he was born around 1879 according to a marriage cert for him & his wife, no idea when he died.

Thanks for your help. Regards Gary
