Unfortunately not. I wish things were that easy 8)

The Corf or Corv at the beginning of the word definitely point to the northern counties but the question is which one?

Thanks anyway,

Think I'll just put "Ireland" for his birthplace and have done with it  ;D

Hi again Christopher,

Was just about to call it a day then.  Well he does call his son James  ;)

Not sure how you would pronouce Correvan.  I live 40 mins drive from Glossop (where he ended up), and I would pronouce that CORVAN  :o Spooky

Hang on though, When was Hugh born??

Sorry Chris, have to cut conversation short, way past my bedtime, busy day at local records office tomorrow  :)

I'd hazard a guess ... Hugh was a head of household when the Valuations took place in Co. Cavan in 1856
so he may well have been born in the early part of the first quarter of the 1800s if not before.

Have a good night's rest 8)

Joan,

The Irish have a tendency to shorten names , in the case of Magheracloone most of the records in England that I've seen are variant forms of Marracloon and it's even worse when the first syllable is dropped as in Lisdoonvarna referred to locally as Varna. I would go along with Christopher's suggestion of Correvan, as the surname was to be found there too.

Good luck,
J.T.A,

I'm not certain if the Irish or English did the shortening. There's a town in Co. Derry called Maghera. Phonetically I think it is Mack er ah or possibly Mah err ah I heard an Englishman pronounce the name Mag ear ah. In the case of much longer names I'm certain it would have been necessary to shorten many of them.

Maghera is Ma-her-a. Magherafelt is Ma-her-felt.
