Experience with Nuns
« on: Friday 21 September 07 23:40 BST (UK) »
I have just found out that 2 of my great, great aunts were nuns, the elderly relative that informed me of the fact has not a clue which order they were with. She thinks they served in Asia, but that is all. I have  spoken to the Parish Priest of the church that they attended and he gave me the contact details of the Order that most girls from the parish joined. They dont have any knowledge of them.
Where do I go next ???

This Family Tree business is certainly strange, 6 months ago I would never have thought I would be in correspondence with a religeous order of sisters

Any help would be greatly recieved

Cheers Silvery, went to my local earlier, I must have bored them rigid with my convent tale.

All the one you've bored stiff (they've only pretended ! ;D ) will be at it on Monday (if not before) telling all their colleagues.   8) 8)

Before long it will be all over the place !!    :)

Of course it's only Friday, gossip may even start earlier.  You will be a celebrity !

Can you try googling what orders went to Asia, as a start. I have loads of nuns in my family and if you can find the order, you can get great information. The orders' archivists are usually quite helpful. I have gotten biographies, obituaries, and pictures of all of my nuns in the States. Definitely worth pursuing.

Simon

You may be able to contact the Diocesan Archivist for the relevant RC diocese, and ask if he knows which orders of nuns were active at the time you are wanting.  He should then be able to give you contact details for all of them.  These people may be only part-time - perhaps they are parish priests as well - but they can be very informative!

Hi Liz and Marie
The only details I have for my great aunts/nuns are as follows

Agnes Wyles born 1885 in Preston, Lancashire

Sarah Jane Wyles born 1887 in Preston Lancashire

They both attended St Augustines Church in Preston
The surname Wyles has variations of spelling in the same family (Wiles, Wills)
