NEW Information regarding High Street, Poplar
« on: Saturday 22 September 07 18:21 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out  information regarding 86 High St ,  Poplar  in 1930

If it was a house  how would I find out if a J.(James) Sullivan,  or G. (George) Sullivan was living there    in April 1930.  I have a receipt from Shirley Brooks Lt. Military Contractors  giving 86 High St. as the address .

If it was not a house, would someone please be able to tell me what was at 86 High St. Poplar.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,  S.Sullivan

Hi,

If it was a house you could have a look at the Electoral Roll for that area;  if a shop then it might be in a trade directory. Old telephone directories might help.

The local library might be able to help you.

Yes, local directories and/or electoral registers should be useful.  I would contact Tower Hamlets local studies to see what they hold http://www.towerhamlets.gov.uk/data/libraries-leisure/data/libraries/history-archive.cfm

You might try contacting the Main Library of the Borough  of Tower Hamlets,
local studies unit.

Until the 1970's-- High Street Poplar was within the Borough of Poplar, then
the Borough of Poplar was changed to the Borough of Tower Hamlets.

Also, in the period you mentioned many Sullivan families lived in the area,
perhaps due to the fact that starting in the mid 1800's and on- (Irish Famine era)
thousands of families from Ireland settled in the East End of London.

Hi,
I have been researching this part of Poplar High Street for a colleague at work.
According to the research I have carried out so far. It looks like at this time is was part of what was the workhouse, redesignated the Poplar Institution in 1913.

"But the workhouse site was full and could only be enlarged by small, piecemeal, purchases of land on the High Street. Some ground at the rear of the Spotted Dog public house was acquired for a laundry extension in 1892, and in 1901 a boiler house was built on a part of the sites of Nos 112–120, behind the frontage on which the LCC later built the School of Marine Engineering and Navigation. (ref. 443) Also in 1901, Nos 84–88 and property in Crawford's Yard to the rear were acquired and the buildings demolished to make way for a medical officer's house on the street (No. 88) and female officers' quarters to the rear."

Hope you find that helpful.

Regards,

Andrew

Seconded the above message.

The Workhouse in Poplar has my Grandad's birth in their records for 1918. When i ordered his birth certificate, it gives the place of birth as 86 High Street, Poplar, so this address was definitely the workhouse. Hope this helps the Original Poster, and anyone else that comes across this post!
