Jenn,
had a look through some of my photos, the one below is of two aussie fellows with similar look to your fellow.
this was taken in WA, after they moved from NSW.
Sorry lousy scan, have better photo but too lazy to get it out  ;)
Hat styles have a lot of similarities.

and to help with calculating age, the photo below is of an Arthur Saunders, age 33 when photo was taken.
I thought seeing as he had a moustache it might help with deciding age.
Your fellow definately looks older.

Another lousy scan :), sorry

thats the best I can come up with.

Hi Jenn, no, it would have been produced at the Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachussetts.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Springfield_Armory

It's not a firm identification, except for the caplock part. It's just a likelihood that that's the rifle, and it was produced in fairly large numbers from the end of the American Civil War. Also known as the 45-70.

Hi Jenn  :)

I know you didn't ask, but I couldn't help it, honest.  I just had to have a play, it's an illness, it really is.  I've said it before, I'm more to be pitied than blamed   :( :(

I do hope you don't mind, cause I think I'm going to play with his brother too..... :-\ :-\
