CANMORE & Am Baile
« on: Sunday 23 September 07 00:45 BST (UK) »
Two very useful sources of information are

Royal Commission of Ancient and Historic Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS).
This has an online database (CANMORE) with an associated mapping system (CANMAP).  Many old buildings, churchs, burial grounds, townships etc are recorded here and occasionally there are photographs.  If the place can't be found in the index then zoom the map in and drag a marker around the area of interest.  A clickable list of all sites in there will then be shown.  You have to register but it is free.

Am Baile links to lots of information about the Highlands including documents, photographs, audio files etc.  Also there is the Highland Sites and Monuments Register (SMR) there.  This has many more buildings not listed on CANMORE and often has a photograph - they welcome photographs of any places that don't have one already.

I don't know if Hebridean Connections has been mentioned previously but they are collecting together information on people and places of the Western Isles.  So far they have part of Harris and Lewis covered.  I recommend a look even if no connections to that area as it shows what can be done online (presumably with a big grant from somewhere!)
