British Home Children - am I on the right path?
« on: Sunday 23 September 07 05:00 BST (UK) »
While researching my maternal grandfather's siblings, I found that my grandfather's sister married a man named Arthur William Slade from Birmingham, England.  I checked their marriage cert on NS Vitals and found that his parents were listed as ?.  This grabbed my interest because my paternal grandmother was a British Home Child.

Arthur's occupation was listed as Soldier so I checked WWI attestation papers and found his next of kin was William Slade, brother.  I also found WWI attestion papers for William and he listed Arthur as next of kin.

Arthur William Slade was born April 2, 1898
William Slade, born May 24, 1896.

Arthur married Grace Clooney (Cluney) on Feb 12, 1918.  I have not found Arthur's death, but I did find a death cert for Grace - she died October 10, 1936 and was listed as widow.

I checked Collections Canada archive for British Home Children and found a William Slade, age 5, departed Liverpool, England, on 1 Jun 1904 and arrived in Halifax, NS on 11 Jun 1904 on the Carthaginian.

There is also an Arthur Slade, the archive states "age illegible, difficult to decipher or not given".  Arthur was on the same boat as William.

Am I on the right track here.  What do I do next?  Opinions, advice, anything  :P

Oops, forgot to mention ... there is also an Annie Slade, age 10, on the same boat.

Cheers

Thank you Genie, I'll have a wee look now.  It is way past my bedtime and my eyes are crossed.

With this find, I guess no housework tomorrow  ;D

1901 census gives some names and, living Worcester which is close to West midlands/Birmingham, they closely match.

ref RG 13/2793/10 page 11

Isaac 50 far lab born East Hamstead London; Mary A 40 Marton St Bernard Wilts;
Isaac H 12, Annie 7, Arthur 4, all b Devizes and William 2 b Martley Worcester.

William and Arthur may have got swapped round.

There is a death for Isaac Slade 52 in March 1903, Worcester 6c 163

Lottie Grace Slade buried Camp Hill Cemetery and thought husband Arthur William Slade would be buried there also but doesn't seem to be a headstone for either.

Death records on NS site are 1908-1955 but I have had trouble finding quite a few of my relatives there, even when I know the name, date & place of death, place of burial, etc.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi, I see there have been a few queries regarding Annie, William & Arthur Slade, British Home Children. They are distant relatives of mine. I have a little bit of background of the family prior to the children going to Canada if anyone is interested? On one forum it stated that Annie died in Canada, she actually didn’t, but was sent back to Uk where she went on to find work, married & had a son. Be interested to share any info.
