The only daughter that I can find that might be a match for Jane Chalmers is Janet Walker Neilson b24 Dec 1854 @ Falkirk - but her date of birth is slightly out.  Could there have been another daughter that is a better fit for Jane?  & who was Mr Chalmers?

Not finding William 1901 - if you know he was married by then, do you know who to? Or what he did for a crust when he grew up?

Jane/Janet/Jessie/Jean/Jeannie/Jennet  were all very interchangeable names!
Unfortunately this doesn't say what the Marital Status is - Jane is probably a widow - but you would have to look them up in SP originals for confirmation.

Unfortunately I know nothing more about William Thomas at this stage.  However, the census data is revealing some new info for me on the families of his siblings - so some interesting stuff there for me to investigate further!

Noting that Jane CHALMERS' daughter was born in Rugby Warks abt 1889- searched Rugby RD Deaths  1887 to 1891 and there is but 1 result on FREEBMD:

Death: Mar Qtr 1889
John Anderson CHALMERS age 38

No  guarantee this is the man thoiugh!

Interesting names for the  IGI  issue of Robert NEILSON & Mary COWIE -  I see on IGI dau: Agnes' middle name was Medina  and Robert's was Raphael! An Italian connection? Thru Arts or Army I wonder? Ingtriguing  

Do want to find them in 1871?

** The 1871 infant must be Matrilda Robina b Jul 1870, and she was probably named after another babe born into this family  10 years earlier, Robina Matilda b May 1861 who has died  at some stage between birth and 1871.

* I checked 1861 again - Wife's name is transcribed as BRAD - original should be checked to see if says BRAID or BAIRD?
It was common enought, for sa married Scottish woman to use her maiden name in Census like this; widows also often reverted to using a maiden name.

Thank you for this.

I notice that the 1871 data gives Robert's wife as Mary Braid.

However, the IGI lists the children's parents as Robert Neilson and Mary Cowie except Mary Baird Neilson, whose mother is given as Mary Baird.

Not too sure what is going on here..................
