I do not understand how a will can be downloaded from the National Archives site. I always understood you had to send £5 to York for a will :-\
Can someone elucidate?

Kooky,

Prerogative Court of Canterbury wills (1384 - 1858) are available for download from the national archives site - £3.50 each.

Good value, too, IMHO - I've downloaded a few.

Applications to York are for wills since 1858, when the national probate system was introduced.

Hi.
When you say you have a problem with pixelation do you mean how I have scanned it.? Is there anything I can do to make it clearer?

Sorry to sound so thick but not used to all this

Hi Carol

I've just had a look at it on your other thread and it really does need to be scanned at a higher resolution  or twice as big to read the detail  :-\

Gadget

PS - you could scan it in sections and put bits up

Hi Gadget.
Thanks for reply. I was about to try rescanning the will when I realised it had been removed from the site by the moderator :(.

I thought as I had paid for the will and it belonged to my family it was ok to post it ???

Never mind, perhaps I'm destined to never know what the will says. Yet another family history mystery

Cheers Carol

Hi Carol  :)

You're allowed to post portions of documents so that we can help you but not the whole thing because of Copyright. You could try just a small bit for a start - say the first paragraph  :)

Carol,
Don't give up.  Although you can't post the entire will on Rootschat you can post bits that you find particulary difficult to read.
Old handwriting can be difficult to read but it does get easier with practise.

I'm sure Rootschatters will be able to help.

Thanks Bearkat and Gadget for your encouragement. 8)

Hopefully this scan of a part of the will can be accepted.

Us family history hunters learn to keep going or we'd never crack any of our brick walls.

Cheers Carol

That's much better, Carol  :)  Put a link to this on your other thread and the will handwriting experts will see it :)

Where there's a will there's a way  ::) ::) ::)

Sorry for the old chestnut but couldn't resist  :D
