Toll House Winnat Derbyshire
« on: Monday 24 September 07 10:28 BST (UK) »
My Ancestor was a Toll Keeper at Owler Bar Holmesfield,Mytham Bridge & Winnat.

I have found the Toll Keepers Cottage at Owler Bar & would like to find the place where the Toll Keeper would have lived at the Winnat Toll Gate.

The Toll gate was very close to Castleton where my Gt.Grandfather Henry Archer was christened in 1834.
His Father (My Gt.Gt Grandfather) John Archer was listed on the birth record as having the occupation of "Toll Keeper" .

I have been informed that the Toll Gates were close to the top of Winnats pass.

 Can anyone please advise

There are no buildings at the top of Winnats pass, but there is a small building at the bottom, which is the entrance to a mine, at the bottom there are some gates and a cattle grid

Thanks for your reply  it has saved me making a fruitless journey.          I am a bit dissapointed that there isn't a cottage to visit though and will have to make do with looking for any old prints if there is any.

Don't suppose you or any one else knows of the existense of a print or old photo?

Great views of Winnats pass even without a cottage

Also got a photo of Mytham Bridge where my Gt.Gt.Grandfather was also the Toll Keeper.
I wonder what cottage he lived in there.
