Hello Holli,

What denomination was John Cain? Was he a  member of the Catholic faith, the Established Church (Anglicans or Church of Ireland), a Methodists or a Presbyterian?

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

You might want to search records under Kane and O'Kane as well.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Holli,

A few other possibilities are Caine, Kain, Cahan, O'Cahan, Kean and Keane

Hi Holli,

Re. Searching for a John Cain born Co.Armagh? about 1830 ish. Had a son William Cain born Co. Armagh1864. William moved to Workington Cumbria around 1870.

Were did you get the info re John and William?. Is William your ancestor and his fathers name on his death certificate? Are you possitive about the date Of Williams birth? Also (sorry for all the questions) did any other Cains move to Cumbria with William as he was only about 6 when he went. The reason I ask is that if i knew the names of any siblings etc. he might be easier  to trace.
I have a family member married to Cain in the early 1800's in Seagoe Parish. I have not traced this line as yet though as I am not a direct descendant. I am interested though in following it up (as time permits).
Let me know and I'll see if I can unearth anything.

Thanks everyone for this.
I have William Cain's marriage cert naming his father as John. Believe him to be protestant. William was my great grandfather and my grandfather was protestant. William was born around 1864 , census records and death cert confirm this. He moved to Workington 1880ish (he is on 1881 England census age 20!) so this would make him about 17. Around then the steelworks were a big industry where he was working) in Workington so this would fit. Can not find any other Cain's in Workington fitting this family.
