Where is ?
« on: Tuesday 25 September 07 08:15 BST (UK) »
On the 1851 Census,
Catharine Hughes is living in Great Gidding with her daughter Ruth Glover,  her place of birth is Norths, Funding. Can any one tell me where this  is and in what county.

Thank you
Debbie Hughes

The writing is not easy.  Could it be Finedon, Northamptonshire?

Alternatively the first letter could be a T. ???

I reckon it's a T Too, and the last 3 letters looks like ING, but I've looked under Northumberland and Northampton and no Place names seem to match..could Norths be somewhere else, like in Wales perhaps?

T____ING NORTHS

I'm inclined to agree with bearkat, and think it could well be a phonetic rendering of  Finedon in Northamptonshire, some 20 miles south-west of Great Gidding.

On your earlier post http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,254549.0.html
I transcribed it as Finding Norths, which was probably Finedon Northants

On the same page there are other people with identifiable birthplaces in Northants where the county is written as Norths, and numerous Farmers or Farm labs where the F is the same. No chance it could be Wales!

Thanks Befordshire Boy,

I am only double checking, Richard Hughes (son of William Hughes & Alice Freeman) did marry Catharine Garrat on the 16th Oct 1815. And she died 30 Dec 1859 aged 78. So she wasn't William Hughes' sister as I was led to believe, but his daughter-in-law. I can't find a buriel for Richard, he wasn't transported to Australia like his brother William (Swing Riots), and he isn't mentioned in the 1841 census, but in the 1851 census Catherine is listed as Widow. His last Child was born in 1826, so he died somewhere between 1826 - 1841, and maybe because of the "Swing Riots" he was forced to seek work in other counties and that's why he wasn't in the 1841 census. Don't you just love a good mystery...and Jigsaw puzzles with pieces missing !!!

Thanks to all who have replied...

I agree that Finedon, Northampton is the likely place, only wish IGI batch numbers covered her likely birthdate of around 1792

I am still worried about the age of 78 on death in 1859, which is totally at odds with her 1851 age of 59 and 1841 age of 45 (ie 45-49).

I know what you mean, what I will do is order her death certificate and hopefully this will shed some light. I've often been told that the censuses are not always accurate and Ages could have been rounded up or down to the nearest 0 - 5. I also know that Parish entries can also be misinterpreted so we will see.

Her husband was born  in 1794 and the 1841 census has her born abt 1796 and the 1851 has her born 1792, these seem more like the right dates, then the death entry that has her born 1781, but he could have married an older woman.!!!!
