Sorry to butt in this late in the game but I don't understand why you say her birth date would be around 1792 if you believe she was 78 when she died in 1859??

It would be right if she was 67 which would be in line with the census returns.

I was wondering where you got the information she was 78?  If it was from a keyed in transcription it is just possibly a mistake of the transcriber being one key to far over.

It's true that census ages can be unreliable, but here we have two which are consistent.

The only census where ages were rounded was 1841 where ages over 15 were rounded down (not up) to the nearest 5 below, so her 45 in 1841 would have covered an age range of 45-49 ie consistent with her 59 in 1851.

that is very interesting, going by the dates it all seems correct, looks like Catherine was born before they married (Oh NO.!!!).

The Death of Catherine Hughes Aged 78, is from a CD I received from Patrick Ellis who has transcribed all Great Gidding BDM entries. Yes it could be a typo so I will go with what you have found as it does seem to fit in, do you know if they had any other children besides Catherine?

Hi All,

Yes it looks like it is all correct (Seahall) , I've just done a search in An***tory and have discovered a family tree with all the info including John Garratt and Catherine Bailey,who had a daughter Catherine who married Richard (Hews), so I think I will be spending the rest of my night studying all this.
Thank you all for your help, it makes being over the other side of the world not so lonely...
