Newman Family of Finmere
« on: Monday 20 December 04 17:18 GMT (UK) »
I would like any help trying to find the following couple and family if possible:

John Newman Esq. married Dorothea ? circa 1790s ?
They had the following children:
Caroline Amelia bapt. 8th July 1798 Finmere
Emma bapt. 9th June 1799 Finmere
George bapt. 3rd Oct 1800 Finmere
William Thomas Newman bapt 8th April 1802 Finmere (witnessed by Charlotte Mary Fallowes)
Isabella Barr Newman bapt. 10th June 1804 Finmere
John Newman bapt. 22nd Nov 1811 Finmere

John junior went on to Eton and then Ireland. He married Josephine ? but I do not have a place or a date. They had a child in Brighton in 1836/7.

Despite being a prominent family I am having difficulty finding out anything about them! Neither Pallot's or Boyds nor the IGI help with marriages and I cannot find any obvious Wills on Documentsonline for John senior and Dorothea.

If anyone has any information or sources they can check I would not only be grateful I'll be laughing...  ;D

Thanks and a Merry Christmas!
Michelle

Hi Michelle,

Have you tried the Oxfordshire Family History Society? It looks as though they have some CD's for sale that may be of help to you.

Regards, Frances

Hi Michelle,
You could try the Oxfordshire Mailing List on RootsWeb. There are many helpful people with a great deal of knowledge about OXF history. I suggest a search of the list archives as I am almost certain that
there have been queries about Newman.

 Merry Christmas :)

P.S.  Just checked Oxfordshire Surnames, several people
 with an interest in Newman.

Re. : John Newman and his wife Dorothea on RootsChat

These were found in the FICHE version of the I.G.I. for Oxford
at Bexley Local Studies Centre

Dorset Beech John Newman bpt. 23/Nov/1789 Banbury OXF  (Jos/Dorothea)
Charlotte                                        5/Mar/1791                          (Jno/Dorothea)
Dorothia Henrietta                          8/May/1792                        (John/Dorothea)
Charles Reyner                              14/May/1794                      (John/Dorothea)
( but still no marriage listed ? - possible look-up for the Banbury P.R. ? )

Then in the 1851 Census at Prittlewell Essex Film 1777 Folio 247
( no other info - needs a look up ? )

Charles P. Newman    56     b. Finmere OXF
Julia B.                        49     b. Canterbury KEN

Then in the I.G.I. for Kent

Marriage 23/June/1827 at St.James the Apostle, Dover, Kent
Charles Raynor Newman and Julia Rebecca Hodges

The discrepancies between the second initials from the 1851 Census may be down to a transcription error ? ie P for R, and B for R.

From a similar case in my own Tree, I wonder if Charles marriage place was anything to do with an Army marriage ? another look-up for the Dover P.R. ?

This was on the The National Archives site (TNA Wills) you may already have seen this ?
John Newman of Banbury OXF 18/Dec/1820

Mike Newman ( a small cog in the Newman Name Society )

P.S. Laughing may be in contra-vention of some obscure Health & Safety Act
P.P.S. ( Dorset Beech John Newman !!!!! .............. the mind boggles ........... )

Hi Michelle ...

This is not very helpful (!), but thought it might be useful to just confirm that there is no John NEWMAN/Dorothea marriage anywhere on the Oxfordshire Marriage Index (1538-1837), nor is there any record of a John NEWMAN marrying in Finmere.

Finmere is only a couple of miles from both the Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire county boundaries - perhaps Dorothea came from "over the border" and the marriage took place in her home village?

I think Finmere village has its own web site with a lot of information in it to help genealogical research.  Look on Google.  I believe they have a local history group too.
