How on earth did they decide to change from Gallahar (poss Gallagher) to Guildford  .

oh... WOW!!! I did actually look at Gallahers at one point, as I think I found one or 2 possibilities... might have been 1851, but couldn't find anything conclusive.

I have been looking at a possible William c1837-1839, Peter c1825 and James c1839 in later census returns listed as Guildford or variants, all in the armed forces and born Scotland. William and Peter are close matches.

thank you, both, for all your efforts... anything else that crops up from this new development much appreciated.. I'm going to see what I can piece together now.

Certainly Guildford and Gallaher are not so close as to be a simple evolution of the name... I wonder did they choose to change it

Oh.. actually... this is the return I viewed and couldn't determine whether is was ours... I had been searching for Agnes and looked twice at this, as the parents' names matches.. but I only have access to the IGI, which gives the Dalton baptisms but not the others.

The occupation is File M (File maker I assume)

This will help placing the birth order for their children and possible clues for their parents' names if they followed Scottish naming pattern.

I can't find Samuel & family in 1851, but I have found a possible match to Agnes, but with a brother we don't know of:

Botchergate, Cumberland
Hugh Gallagher 21 Hand Loom Weaver Scotland
Agnes Gallagher 19 sister Scot
Peter Gallagher 2 Nephew Carlisle

Supplimental... have also found Agnes Gallahar, Extraparochial, Westmorland, a house servant on a farm aged 18. This is probably a better match

Might be worthwhile you looking at the original image of the OPR marriage (or it may simply be the reading of the banns?) entry on Scotlands People. Might not have any further info, but there is always the chance that you might find out a little bit more about either Samuel or Mary.

I did see the 1851 entry for Agnes. Like you, I haven't as yet found Samuel and/or Mary in 1851.

Gadget, not sure about the Gilbertson link - haven't as yet found any direct link. It may connect at the level of Samuel and Mary for whom we have little info on as yet.
