South Farm, Cowpen
« on: Wednesday 26 September 07 15:12 BST (UK) »
My great grandfathers birth certificate states he was born at Cowpen South Farm. I have seen an old map showing this farm, but am trying to work out where it would have been in present day Blyth. Would it have been around the "Avenues" area?

The acknowledged authority on this board for anything to do with Blyth/Cowpen is Michael Dixon; you will just have to wait for him to come on line!

cavvytri,

Although I am/was more familiar with Cowpen North Farm area, I know a wee bit about Cowpen South Farm.

And I think you did well to look for Cowpen South Farm in Blyth. Many others would have looked around Cowpen (village).

Today's site in sort of western edge of Second Avenue. Just south of the join of Princess Louise Road and Newsham Road. Just south of where the railway line, Newsham to Blyth,  crossed above the road by  bridge.

See CSF in grand isolation on Greenwood's Map of 1828, and on Ordnance Maps of 1860 and 1897 (6 inch versions).. also CNF

These maps online at site   communities.northumberland.gov.uk
in Blyth section, in subsections "Plans" and "Ordnance Maps"

Cowpen North Farm was very close to corner where the North Pit was ( later to be called Bates Pit), site then housed a pub, called "The North Farm"
( inventive what ? ) , now I think a Quick-Fit-something opposite Netto.

The CSF was about just over a mile due south of CNF.

That Jennifer knows a thing or two... she's my agent !

Thankyou for the details. I thought it mustve been in or around that area-ish ;D. They moved from there to Cowpen Quay, then Pegswood then Ashington, where they are buried. Nice to know where the farm was though. :)

Since I posted this enquiry I have come across a great site for Northumberland and Durham. Its possible to see a modern map with the historical place youre searching for marked on it....now I know exactly where Cowpen South Farm was!
