Hi Caroline,

In lieu of someone about to pop in and explain  "Van Mau"  - nothing is showing up
http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/

Can you tell us the name of the ancestor in question?
Paisely is Renfrewshire and Gorbals is in the Glasgow area of Lanarkshire.

Are there other births of children to the same parents and any 1841 Census records for them?

Cheers

His parents were John Wiseman and Isabella Nicol.  All there other kids weree christened in the Gorbals

Hi Caroline

Which entry is that one attached to - the Extracted birth for him to those parents does not mention "of Van Mau".   Is it attached to a submitted marriage record?

"Of Van Mau" in that case would indicate  he is living somewhere that sounds like Van Mau (or phonetic rendering of) whenever that event (marriage?) occured. So it's a Census around the time of the (event marriage? ) to look at perhaps?

Hi Caroline

OK - I have  found him on IGI:
A submitted record in the Pedigree Resource File - which can be notoriously incorrect (Paisley is in Renfrew, for a start!)
John Wiseman  born  abt 1835 of Van Mau,Paisley,Lanark,Scotland
Christening:  1 Nov 1835, Gorbals,Lanark,Scotland
Parents John Wiseman and Isabella Nichol
Spouse: Jessie  :  Marriage: 13 Dec 1867, Milton,Glasgow,Lanark,Scotland

(another Extracted record says, wife was Jessie WILSON)

What about this Census Record - I'll  bet you anything you like this is the basis for that submitted record  ;D and something's got skewed along the way to the Pedigree File!

1871: Anderston,  Glasgow Barony, Lanarkshire
Ref: Parish 644/8  ED 73, Page 13
Address: 27 Catherine St
Head: John WISEMAN 36, Van Man , b Paisley
Wife: Jessie WISEMAN 32, Van Mans Wife, b Edinburgh
Dau: Ann WISEMAN 3, b Glasgow
Mother: Jane WILSON 45, b Edinburgh **
Son:  John WILSON 13, Scholar, Edinburgh

"Man" can very very easily look like "Mau" in the "joined-up" hand-writing scripts.

** Mother of Jessie, her age may be mistranscribed  or Jessie's is?  And cannot say what order they are in on the original - specifically, where John WILSON fits in: if he is listed after Jane he's more likely to be her son, but if he is listed after or before Ann he would probably be Jessie's son born before she married John WISEMAN.  Would need to check the SP Original to be sure of what it says.

The thing is, is that submitted record correct in attributing THAT John b Paisley, husband of Jessie as a son chr Gorbals of John WISEMAN & Isabella NICOL........In 1881, John 46 Jessie 43 and Ann 13 are at the same address in  Barony with  John noted as b Paisley, a Millers Carter.

Cheers
