Convicts to Australia 1844
« on: Wednesday 26 September 07 18:56 BST (UK) »
In case you may researching these family names, here's a list of convicts from Beds that set sail on the William Jardine in 1844 to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), along with my Samuel Partridge.

Robert APPLEBY
James WALLER
George LADD
Joseph CULLIP
John BLUNT
Thomas BROWN
David WILDMAN

I have some detail of each of these I gleaned from the Millbank prison register, plus the following

Thomas EMERY - who went to VDL on Pestongee Bomanjee
William BRITTAIN - to VDL on the Robert Peel
Amos JONES - to Norfolk Island on Hyderabad

Let me know if you think they are yours, & I'll write out any detail I have.

Regards John

A bit more information about convict AMOS JANES (JONES/JAMES).
Amos Janes, from Dunstable, died on Norfolk Island on 20th July 1845.  He had been convicted of arson and sentenced to transportation for life on 14th March 1844 at Bedford Assizes when he was 18 years old.

Judy,   Typical ! - this was the last name I came across & don't have a lot to offer.

Amos Janes age 19, single, labourer, can read, got transported for life for Arson, discharged on 10 Oct 1844 on the Hyderabad to Norfolk Island.

& helpfully the 1841 census has him on his own, age 15 Ag Lab in Chalk Hill, Houghton Regis.

Sorry not much extra for you.  Regards John

Hi John.
Ah......another Chalk Hill laddie!
I have a newspaper article on this one, Petty Sessions.
He was accused of setting fire to a pig-stye (sic) at Bidwell.  When he was arrested he 'shook very much' but denied the charge saying that he went into the close to answer the call of nature!
Bless him - he didn't survive very long on Norfolk Island.
Regards. Judy
