Hi Sue

Followed your trail across the border from the other thread:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,258275.0.html

This is going to be tricky because thye appear to have been together around 1835-ish because of the birth of Margaret (6 on the 1841).

Your family remind me of the books by Betsy Whyte - The Yellow on the Broom, etc. and some lovely photos of hawkers, travellers and tinsmiths in the School of Scottish Studies. There was an obvious pattern to the movements from Aberdeenshire and further north in the summer down through Fife in the winter.  Rainey appears to be an Aberdeenshire/NE Scotland surname.

I think it will be very difficult to trace them using the 'normal' records. They were most likely married by declaration. The best course of action might be to try and see if one of the children who was born later in Northumberland was registered and, if so, to get the birth certificate. This would give Catherine's maiden surname.

Regards

Thomas Rainey - appears as 4 mths on the 1851:

Thomas Rainey, Morpeth,  Dec quarter , 1850, vol 25, page 335

This should give you Catherine's maiden name.
