MacLEOD/McLEOD Isle of Harris 1800+
« on: Saturday 29 September 07 02:04 BST (UK) »
The known history of our MacLeod family is far too sketchy but 40 years ago my late father-in-law would regale us with tales of the droving and swimming the cattle across from Bernera.

Great grandfather is believed to have been James McLeod a cattle drover  married to Selina MacLean. and living on the Island of Harris

Their children's dates are approximate and all born on Harris-
Murdoch  1857
Marion 1859
Donald 1862
Hugh  1865
Catherine 1869
Christina 1872

GrandfatherMurdoch married Barbara Mackenzie from Dingwall in Inverness in 1893 and the family lived on the Dunain estate.
Their children were :
Jessie - Mrs Finlay Macdonald, Clephanton.
James(my father-in-law)b1895 marr.Mary Ann Lilias Macintoshin Nairn 1925.
All Lil's family emigrated to Canada except for one sister ( Kate?) in Nairn.
Jim was living with his widowed mother at Lochdhu farm ,Nairn now.
His father Murdoch said to have died young following being hurt on a farm.
I cannot find a death certificate for Murdoch MacLeod.
Selina 1896-1902  died from an adder bite at Dunain
Barbara 1902 - married Hugh Stewart ,Brightmoney farm, Auldearn.
Selina ( Sally)  .She married Jack McGoldrick, Kirkintilloch.

Murdoch's sister Catherine married Neil MacAskill and they had 3 children
Donald
Johnnie
Kate a widow lived on the family croft No 3 Newton or Newtonferry North Uist.
One of the MacAskills was a policeman in Glasgow.

I am ploughing through scotlandspeople but there are gaps still.
While there are folks who remember I'm anxious to fill in these gaps for my son and grandsons MacLeods all so they learn their island history.

Thank you for this Ann.

I have passed Poolton Farm recently not knowing the connection !
Story was he was hurt by a bull on the farm - which perhaps led to the cancer.
Of course it has thrown up more questions !

It was known his mother was Salina /Selina Maclean but his birth certificate now shows her as Valentia - Maybe the registrar mis- heard and of course the father James could not write nor read either presumably so made his mark blissfully unaware.

Another step along the way.I never knew they were at Poolton though the family talked about Petty .I'd looked for him in Nairn since his son married from  Lochdhu cottages.
Thanks again.
Fransmoi.
