Hi Finnisfinder

Are you sure it isn't Rossiter?

You could post a portion of the cert on the Common Room board if you want a second/ third etc opinion?

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Thanks for replies. It is definitely Nofsiter. I checked the handwriting on the certificate, so I know that it is an "N" at the beginning. The handwriting is very clear so I'm in no doubt that it is the name.

The marriage took place on 11th November 1877 at the Independent Chapel, the Cattle Market, Sandwich, between John Belsey Finnis and Ann Spratling.

regards Finnisfinder.

A search of a well-known database returns no NOFSITER surnames at all.

I wonder if it was misheard?

There is a William (Bill?) NASTER born Sandwich on the 1881 census?

;)

What does it say Mumsie - I don't have access & could only see the Google results, which seem to say 6 in one county and 1 in another (suggests mistranscription rather than a thriving population, lol!)

I suspect it was most likely NOSSITER with the double S written in the old style, as I think are the ten examples on Family History On Line, there all in Somerset and Dorset. and were probably mistranscribed.

There is a Sarah NOSSITER in service in Dover in 1881, she is the only one showing up in Kent.
