Hi Jenny,
Which records office were you thinking of?  Newington comes under the reg. district of St. Saviour, Southwark.
I found Herbert on the 1901 census that you mentioned living in Hackney as a boarder in the household of Robert Tillman.  Herbert was age 23, a pianoforte worker, b. Newington.  Also a boarder was a Henry Foreman age 25, a Post Office porter also b. Newington.  Very likely a brother to Edith Foreman?
There is a marriage on FreeBMD, Q4 1904, Islington with Herbert Hall & Edith Sarah Foreman on the same page (1b 520)
The strange thing is, that I can't find him in 1881 or 1891  ???  Do you have his marriage certificate & are you sure his father was James Hall?

Two possibilities for his birth on the GRO index,
Herbert Hall  Q1 1878 (1b 583) Hackney
Herbert James W. Hall Q2 1878, Islington (1b 409)

I thankyou so much for your reply
I have been stuck for ages on this I have the marrige certificate Herbert Hall married Edith Sarah Foreman in 1904He was 27 His  father as James Hall( Publican )
On the census 1901 there is a James Hall publican of the Wenlock Arms Hoxton
There are rumours in the family  that Herbert was some how related to Harry hall Clothing Company They make riding clothes I havent found any connection
Herbert seemed to think that he missed out on some money

I presume that's the Wenlock Arms, North London?  Can you give more details for the 1901 census & this James as we can probably use it to trace this James back & maybe find Herbert.
Harry Hall Equestrian clothing have been manufacturing since 1896 so it's quite possible there is a connection  :)

Jenny, I've looked all through the 1881, 1891 census to see if I could pin this family down, with no luck  :(  The 1901 census , I'm sure you'll agree, was of little help as no one seemed to know where they were born  ::) so I couldn't even track James back with any certainty.
