place lookup on 1851/1861 censuses
« on: Sunday 30 September 07 16:12 BST (UK) »
Hi,
can someone find help  me?
I need to find the location on a map of 2 places in Shillington ,Beds in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses.I though that it might help if someone could give me the place names immediately before and after the place name I give so I could find it on a map.
Both census returns concern a Lydia HALLWORTH aged 64/74 respectively from Pulloxhill,a Dressmaker. She  lives with a Mary STAPLETON from Marston Moretaine. These are the place names.

1851-Green End
1861-Smiths End

Many thanks to anyone who can help me
Trisha ;D ;D ;D ;D

1861 Shillington district 2 census starts at Smiths Green, so don't know what is before; but afterwards comes Marquis Hill, last entry is Marquis of Grandby Public House. Lydia Halworth is in property #10 out of 26 in Smiths Green.

Marquis Hill was the road between Shillington and Lower Stondon which then turned into Shillington Rd. See Google maps or http://www.shillington.info/

Also see http://www.old-maps.co.uk/indexmappage2.aspx which shows the Marquis of Granby

1851 Lydia Walworth ! is in property (no 91) in Green End. Prior to this was Church Street (1st property of Green End (no 56) - just after the Vicarage). After the last property (no 102) of Green End, is Upton End.

Hi John,
many,many thanks.
After lots of searching on old maps of Shillington I've found where she lived in both censuses thanks to you.I do  wonder though,if Green End and Smiths Green are one and the same place.
Your'e a star :-*

Trisha,  On 1861 Smiths End & Green End are described separately within 2 different enumeration districts of Shillington.

Hi John,
thanks for that.I wonder why she moved?1851-Green End-1861 Smiths Green .However by 1863 on her death certificate she's down as dying at an address at Green End.Oh well I'll probably never know.
Thanks for all the help on this John.
By the way you helped me on a post concerning the same lady and her death notice and getting help from Bedford Library.Well I got in touch with the Rootschatter you mentioned who gave me advice and Bedford library were brilliant. This is the lady who has the story that she was the neice of George Washington on her gravestone.Well it was a well enough known story by the time of her death that even though she was a very lowly spinster dressmaker she merited a death notice mentioning this fact. However having said this I don't believe a word of it.I honestly think she made this relationship up to boost her standing in the local community for some reason.Apparently Washington scholars have in the past tried to trace the relationship and got knowhere.
Anyway, thanks for helping me on that post as well as this one,
