I'm having trouble locating a John Giles Walker in the census returns before 1881.  I have him in 81, 91, and 01.

He was born about 1850 in Maryport, Cumberland.  On the 81, 91 and 01 he was living with his wife and family in Northumberland.  He was described as a Grocer / Draper.

There is a candidate on the 71 Census but I don't this is the right one as his occupation is completely different.  He and what looks to be a brother, Richard, are lodgers.

Could anyone with more knowledge check the 61 census for me as I can't progress without knowing parents names.  Perhaps Maryport is part of another area and I'm missing something.

I look forward to hearing from anyone who may have some information on this family.

Having looked in all of the usual places with no success - unless he was the John WALKER bap 1848, son of Alexander and Ann/Nancy (nee PEARSON) - it seems your best hope is by getting his marriage certificate.

Hello Jan

I've just been researching John Giles Walker 1849-1902, and I wonder if you are still looking for him?

I've got him in all the Censuses, and I've traced his paternal line back to 1629.  I would be happy to share this with you if you want it. We must be related through JG's grandfather, Richard.

Hoping to hear from you,

Dot  :)

Hi Dot and Jan,

I am a descendant of John Giles Walker's brother, William Walker. I have traced my great grandfather (William) back to Maryport but I am stuck there.  Dot, I see that you have traced John Giles (and William) back to 1629. I would love to see what you have found out.

I live in America but have traveled to England over the years and I am still in touch with descendants of John Giles Walker and William Walker.

Hope to hear from you.
