Information about William Barnard
« on: Monday 01 October 07 10:18 BST (UK) »
Please, can anyone help me?  I am trying to find some records for my great grandfather, William Barnard.  The 1901 census shows that he was 33 years old (b 1868 in Lansantffraid).  I have also found a record that he died in 1910 in Corwen. I have been unable to find any record of his birth.

I have a marriage certificate showing that he married Mary Ellen Roberts in 1897 and his father is shown as Richard Barnard (deceased). William and Mary Ellen had a daughter Elizabeth Ellenor (b 1898) who was my grandmother.

I cannot find any record of William on the 1881 or 1891 census returns.  On the 1871 census, I have found a William Barnard born in Llansantffraid, son of Richard and Elizabeth, but his date of birth is about 1862.  Similarly, I cannot find any record of Richard Barnard.

If anybody can put me on the right track or has any information I would be most grateful.

Hi GuessL

Welcome to Rootschat!  :)

When posting it helps to put as much info as you can - for example there is more than one Llansaintffraid!

I think this is your family?

RG13/5247/106/3

William BARNARD H M 33 - slate-maker in quarry - Merioneth Llansantffraid (sic) Welsh
Mary Ellen W M 22 - do Corwen Both
Lizzie Ellen dau 3 - do Both
John Richard son 2 - do

11 New Inn Terrace, Corwen, Merionethshire

Can you give the reference of the 1871 census you found?  Bearing in mind that census ages can alter over the years, why do you think this is not you man?

It might be helpful to get the death certificate to see if it gives further information, but do you have the marriage cert - can you give the names of witnesses and other details please/

Hoping to help

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Tati - well I was wondering if GuessL would tell us, just in case we jumped to the wrong conclusion...  ;)

I wonder if this is a remote possibility for 1891?  Maybe with a brother or cousin?

Just a thought, you two  :)

Would the Llansanffraid be Llansantffraid Glyndyfrdwy*? just to the east of Corwen. I have the records to 1812 but they are all packed up. It would be on the Corwen Census sheets, I think.

Hi Gadget - welcome on board!  :D

Northwalesbmd has the death of a Richard in Bala 1879 - is that at all likely?

There's also a Richard with son William in Llangwm in 1871, but I need a geography lesson to tell if that is wide of the mark!

 ;)

Bala's not all that far away and llangwm is just to the north :

Hope this works:

Glyndyfrdwy is just off the map too the east - along the Dee.

Yes Arranroots, RG13/5247/106/3 is my family. The reference for the 1871 is as Tati suggested is RG10/5684 121 6 .  I'm not sure about the family in Ffestiniog but I am not aware of any of my families coming from there.  Gadget could be on the right track as I know for certain a lot of my fathers family were born or lived in Glyndyfrdwy.

Not sure what else I can tell you at the moment - this site is still very new to me.

Hi again

Sorry I missed your reply the other day - I am hoping Gadget's local knowledge will come into play here - can you see any likely candidates, Gadget?

Have you got any certificates for this family GuessL?

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)
