Windows Vista and LDS Resource File Viewer
« on: Tuesday 02 October 07 02:28 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have recently switched over to Windows Vista from Windows XP and now cannot instal my LDS Resource File Viewer from any of the LDS CDs.  I have several different programs containing the File Viewer but none of them work.  Any suggestions, keeping in mind I am not a computer whiz but a grandmother struggling with technology ::) ::) ::)

You may want to refer to another topic which might assist you with your problem:-

If the installation process terminates before it reaches the end then the advice is to make sure you are logged on as the Administrator as Vista is stricter about letting 'unsigned' (old) programs being installed.  This is to prevent viruses and or malware getting on to your system.

I had the same problem - I managed to get the Viewer to install, but everytime I try and install a Resource File that fails. It's definitely an issue with the new stricter security within Vista (which has caused me nothing but issues so far).

To install the Viewer - I browsed to the CD, right clicked on setup.exe and said "Run as Administrator" - this seemed to work. The strange thing about Vista is that although when you create your profile when installing, it says you are an administator but you actually aren't - you don't have the same rights as the inbuilt Administrator profile - which is a change from XP etc.

Still trying to find a solution to the Resource File issue, as I cannot view anything in my Viewer right now.

From what I can see its a good reason not to instal Vista - how dare they decide what programmes you can use on your computer, it is your own responsibility regarding protection against bad files etc.,

I wonder what the real agenda is regarding their stance on what disks will work and what won't.

Okay found the solution, my 1881 census and Vital Records are now working. Here it is...

If your computer is running Windows Vista and you are trying to use the Resource File Viewer:

1. Install the Resource File Viewer 4.0
2. Right-Click on the Resource File Viewer icon on your desktop and select Properties.
3. Click the Compatibility Tab
4. Put a check in the box to run in compatibility mode for: and make sure that Windows XP (Service Pack 2) is selected.
5. Put a check in the box to "Run this program as an administrator"
6. Click OK

Hi,

Thanks to all for this helpful advice ;D ;D ;D.  It has taken me a couple of days but I have at last been able to instal my LDS Resource File Viewer :P :P :P.

I can now start on the other 101 challenges before me on trying to convert to Windows Vista :'( :'(, what a performance.  I am regretting choosing Vista and would advise anyone thinking of changing to stick to Windows XP.
