Whitelond, Kent - Cannot find any reference
« on: Wednesday 03 October 07 00:36 BST (UK) »

Hi,

Whitelond , Kent has come up on the census as a place of birth for my GG Grandmother. I cannot find any reference to this name so can only assume it's been mispelt ?

Can anyone please shed any light on this place please ?

Many thanks
Laurie

Hi Laurie

Just for reference - it's the 1851 Census:
of Jane TYLER wife of Joseph.

In other Census she has POB as Woolwich

HO107 /  Piece  1556 /  Folio 131 /  Pg 16

Hopefully more opinions will come in, but....

I don't think it says Whitelond - I think it says "Whitstone" - with the upstroke on the s is 'invisible (or very pale on the original?) and see other 's' on the page for comparison.  The last 4 letters I am sure are "tone" not "lond". The t cross bar, crosses  first t and swings over  right accross the next t and ends just above the final e.

So,  next question is , where or what was Whitstone?   ;D  ;D

Cheers

Thx Ambly, this is a right old game trying to decipher the writing. I have only found a Whitstone Lane, Beckenham so far. Maybe it's a very old name ?

I'll resume the search tomorrow  ::)

I would agree with Ambly - and attached is an enhanced image in case anyone else wants to try.
However, given that census pages are only transcriptions (after the fact) by the enumerator of his notes made when he visited the house - the chance of a total error is large.
Jane has this address for 1851, but for:

1861 = Poplar, Middx (a simple mistake, its where they were living)
1871 = Woolwich
1881 = Woolwich
I didnt, on a quick look find them after that.

There is a marriage between Jospeh Tyler and (possibly) Jane Naylor, on freebmd - Poplar dist. Dec qtr 1845 (5/350)
IGI have a birth for Jane Naylor 24 Nov 1825, Bapt. 18 DEC 1825   Saint Mary Magdalene, Woolwich, Kent, England - parents John and Mary Ann Naylor.

ps - just seen your other post - so you already know most of this. I would recommend stop looking for "whitstone' or whatever - its a red herring. The enumerator proably guessed because he couldn't read his own writing from his notes!!

It could very easily be a lands name - like a farm, an estate, a particular area of a town/village or similar - or  a road or lane, or a group of houses.

There's not a lot of them - but I just looked up 4 different people in 2 Census who have POB as "Whitstone, Kent". Every single one when I look at the image, it is "Whitstable" !!!

Thank-you so much everyone ! All very interesting indeed.

I found 'Whitstone Lane, BECKENHAM' on google, it's a new development but may have been named after an old place ?

Thats possible - but then why go all the way to Woolwich to have her christened? Its not far by today's standards (about 9 miles) but in 1825 people would generally use their local church.

The bulk of evidence suggests Woolwich as place of birth (key rule for genealogy - always look for more than one source of reference). There is only one mention of 'whitstone'.

Do we know if maybe her father was in the Army ? ... Woolwich was a military town .... I wonder if she was born in Kent and the family moved there shortly after   :)

Though if I'm honest  ::) I do have to agree with Nigel  " always look for more than one source of reference " !!  ;D ;D
