FLETCHER
« on: Wednesday 22 December 04 01:50 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone researching the surname Fletcher in Durham.  I have little information other than -

John Fletcher, Iron Moulder, lived in Oldham, Lancashire in 1881.  Wife Martha, children Mary Ann & Fred.  John was said to be 29 years old and was born in Durham, England.

John and Martha had more children after 1881 and their daughter May Fletcher married Frank Taylor at Oldham in 1903.

Hello Irene,

looking at the '81 census it would seem that as Martha was born in Oldham then they probably married there about 1875/6.

If you could get their marriage certificate that should expand the information on your Fletcher family.
It would name their fathers, give occupations and might also give a birthplace.

The IGI has two John FLETCHERS of Durham, but the ages are a little out.
baptised 23-7-1848 at Norton, DUR

Cheers

Hi Geoff,  Thanks for that!

I have found a marriage on Free BMD -

John Fletcher
Martha Cooper
Oldham
Dec Qtr 1875  8d 1120

so I am hopeful that is them!  Will have to send of after Christmas for the certificate.

I also found on the same site births for a John Fletcher and a David Fletcher in Durham on the same registration page - dates fitted.  Always a possibility that they were twins.

This is my daughter in law's father's family.  He seemed to think that his father (the son of John Fletcher's daughter was a twin) perhaps he is confused and it was his grandmother's father who was a twin.  He has been notoriously confused about a lot of other stuff so who knows.

Many thanks, regards, Irene, Qld, Australia
