Can anybody read this occupation?
« on: Friday 05 October 07 23:07 BST (UK) »

I apologise if this makes the page too wide, I don't know if I cropped it and resized it enough :)

I am looking at Sarah's occupation, which is given as labourer's wife, and to me it looks like millionaires wife ;D ;D

I'm thinking either mariner or milliner.  Anybody else got any suggestions?

Rosemary

Rosemary - if it was from a census return you could always post the details if you wish?

Sorry - the image wasn't there when I replied .. .. we could still check the actual return though .. ..

Sorry it went the other way.  I'm useless at this.  The census is 1881, it's Sarah Grogganes b1856, living in Whitehaven, Cumberland.  She was born there as well.

I tried it first, and it was too big, but have reduced it too much, never mind.

It does look as though the original entry stated 'Wife' and it has then been written over .. ..

I wonder if it's mariner's wife (over the start of wid......... for widow perhaps) amongst all the scrawl :-\ :-\

I've just deleted the return - but I think Rosemary will confirm the husband was a Labourer?  :-\

Yes her husband was a labourer, but not long before that for a long time he was a weaver in a cotton factory, as were most of his family.  I don't know if that shines any light on it :)

I just noticed the occupation 3 down from it - mariner.  The "m" at the beginning of it doesn't look like the beginning of the mystery word, maybe a "w"?
