Hello

Is anyone still researching the Brooks family from Bladon? I have been searching for many years to find the birthplace and parents of Charles Brooks, who died in Witney in 1836, aged 60. I know from his will that, at that time, he had a living brother named Richard and a deceased brother named John. He had a niece, Harriet, living with him at the time of his death, who I assume was the daughter of John.

I am hoping that John Brooks of Bladon was his brother. If anyone out there has access to the Bladon records then I'd really appreciate a search for Charles Brooks, born circa 1776.

Regards
Julie

Bladon baptisms (1684-1856) can be searched on the Family Search website (batch nos. C024301 and C024302).  Unfortunately, the earliest baptism recorded is in 1799.

Thanks Pennie.

It looks like I may never find the info I'm looking for. At least the searching keeps me entertained :)

Hi Julie

I have the parish records for Bladon which cover baptisms 1545 - 1947, marriages 1545 - 1976 burials 1545 - 1978.

In the baptism section no CHARLES which is a shame - where else do you think he may / could have been baptised - if he ever was?

I reckon you will do well to try a search with the Oxfordshire Family History Society of their Baptism Index. There is a small charge for this but if he was baptised it may well show him up and save time?

If they get a result I have almost all of the Oxfordshire Parish Records so come back and give us a shout.

Hi Nigel

Thanks for your replies. Charles Brook(e)s married Ann Sydenham in Witney in 1802 and worked as a gunsmith/ironmonger in Witney, where he died in 1836. His wife had died previously in 1822. There is no mention of his son Charles (born 1812 in Witney) in his will, so I assume he had already died. His daughter Ann (my direct ancestor) was the main beneficiary.

All the records I have for the Sydenham family are from either Kidlington or Witney. I know that Charles had brothers named Richard and John Brooks (and a niece Harriet). Other children of John were mentioned in will (no names) but no children of Richard.

I would have thought Charles and his brothers would have been born not too far from the Witney area but I have been unable to find any entries that could link them through common parents.

Thank you once again for your interest.

Kindest Regards
Julie
