Hi Barbara,
It was closer to Moss Side than to All saints but still close to M/c Poly

Ooops not a good image at all :(

Try
http://www.images.manchester.gov.uk/

and Hulme Town Hall in search for better images

And that would be one posh cafe or is it posh nosh ;D

No luck so far with images of Silk St Hulme, Jean, but i have seen other posts in the past containing maps. There is also a Manchester Maps topic in Lancs resources.

Cheers
Tony

Thanks Tony,
I think (having seen the pic) that I am mixing Hulme up with Chorlton on Medlock.  ::) What used to be Chorlton Town Hall is now the MMU Righton Building, and I've definitely eaten lunch there!

Posh nosh or maybe pukka tucker?

There's only one thing for it, I'll have to buy a map of old C-on-M and Hulme!

Silk street is the next street west of Kingston street. I lived around the corner from them during the war. Sad to say they were flattened.
I have a map section dated 1894 if you are interested.
Be aware that people walked a few miles to work in them days. There were lots of Mills by the river Irwell. I would think about 1/2 an hour to walk to work. Also near by was a large India rubber comapny. which became Dunlops in the 1900's.

Hi Tony,

You mean in your time there were barracks down there......................  grin.

I also at one time lived in Moss Side near Moss Lane East and walked to work up Lower Moss Lane to the corner of Chester road. There was no direct bus route to this place. It took about 25 minutes.

Thanks for the welcome

Hi Mike,
St George's Barracks were converted to St George's Park, a bit after your time methinks ;D ;D

I went to a cinema down towards Lower Moss lane to watch an early Bond Movie and remember having to walk down there, about 30 mins from where I was.

Sorry Jean, this does not help with your post at all, but does help to set the context :)

best wishes
Tony

Hi Tony,
the picture houses were east of Lower Moss Lane near the top end of Preston street and Boston street. There was the 'Pop', the 'Junction' and near by was the 'Crescent'. However to the west at the bottom end of Moss lane West in Brooks Bar was the 'Imperial'. North of this one down a side street to the west of Chorlton road was the 'Globe' (The Bug Hut)

I have a map section dated 1894 if you are interested.

I'm interested! Do you thnk you could post it?

I'm going to order the map for Chorlton-on-Medlock, but I don't know if Jean's streets will be on it. My rellies were at the C-on-M end of Hulme, Newcastle St and Chester Rd.

Tony & Mike, do you remember the 53 bus? It was the original banana route, they all came in bunches..  ;D  I used to get that bus from Longsight through the areas you're talking about, to school in Rusholme & to Old Trafford at weekends , and to Maine Rd as well (boyfriend was a City fan, I was a Red).
