Hi I am new to family history and have traced some one back to Scotland.
Has anyone any infomation on Bessie Thomson  From Dundee born about 1861    in Leith Edinburgh  I have found her on the 1871 census Reg Number 282/3
Reg district St Clement
Paris Dundee
County Angus
Father Name David M Thomson
Mother Name Betsy Thomson

I would like to know how I get her birth certificate but have found Scotlands people site difficult to use. Any help gratefully accepted

From IGI at this looks like Bessie's birth entry:

BETSY WILHELMINA ISABELLA THOMSON Birth: 11 JAN 1861  Leith, Midlothian, Scotland
Parents: DAVID MILLAR THOMSON and BETSY MACKERSIE

A few other children show. There is probably more but with mother's maiden surname, likely this may be spelt in ways that IGI may not be picking up on:

1. LYONELL THOMSON  Birth: 06 DEC 1863 Leith, Midlothian, Scotland
2. MAGGIE EDITH THOMSON  Birth: 18 APR 1866 Leith, Midlothian, Scotland

This looks like the parents' marriage (or Banns) from the Old Parish Registers (pre 1855):

DAVID MILLER THOMSON  Marriages: Spouse: ELIZABETH MUCKERSIE    
Marriage: 10 SEP 1846 North Leith, Midlothian, Scotland

Unfortunately, BMDs are only available to view on Scotlands People. Maybe if you post what difficulties you are having on Scotlands People, someone may be able to offer you advice on how to resolve the issues. You could order the cert. for Betsey, but it would be cheaper/quicker to view it on-line. You can then back it up on your computer and print off.

Other probable children from IGI parent search:

Isabella Muckersie Thomson [stet] christened 23/4/1849 North Leith with parents David Miller Thompson and Elizabeth Muckersie [stet]

John Thomson b 26/10/1853  North Leith parents as above

David Miller Thomson b 30/11/1856 Leith



Agree with previous poster that you really should be able to get plenty of info, at relatively small cost, from Scotlands People.

Bill Terrell has a vast Muckersie family tree at the above website. Parents: DAVID MILLAR THOMSON and BETSY MACKERSIE are mentioned but not Betsy ( although there is a gap in the birth years where she "could" fit in.
