James Magee- Belfast
« on: Saturday 13 October 07 11:24 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

As far as I know my great grandfather had a wife who died and later re-married. I know he was born approx 1874 and his second wife was called Alice Mooney.

I think his first child might have been from the first wife, she was called Jane Magee (Also known as Jinnie).  He then went on to have more children, Robert Magee, Elizabeth Magee, Alice Magee and Annie Magee. I think only one child was from the 1st wife but not too sure. He also lived in Scotland for a few years around 1911 but moved back to belfast in time for the census. They lived on leeson street. I've located James & Alice on that census.

Can anyone help me shed any light on who the first lady was? I'd love to know.

Hi.
James Magee married Alice Mooney, on the 26 June 1896, in  the Roman Catholic Church in Belfast Urban No 9 district.
No 9 is Lisburn Road area, so the R.C., church may have been the Derryvolgie Ave., R.C., church.

Hi.
Could this be the first wife ?. Marriage was in the same district, so it may have taken place in the same church.

James Magee married Isabella Moore, on the 2 November 1889.

I'm not sure, but I think Derryvolgie would have been the local R.C., church. Some other Rootschatter may be able to confirm or put you on to another church in the area.

Gosh, where did you find this? I always would have thought it would have been St. Peter's church as James lived around the Falls road area for his married life with Alice (apart from their short stay in Scotland)

Does it name any witnesses etc?

This is very interesting indeed, thank you for your help!

Hi.
Got what I did from Emerald Ancestors site. For a fee they supply all the details.
Checked an old pocket street directory I have, and Derryvolgie Ave., is in No 9, so more than likely their church.

Hi again.
On the site below I entered "Alice Magee" for a 1901 census search and found one at 2 Disraeli St., in the Shankill area. She is a boarder with two "Mooney's".

May be a family connection.

I'd been using that belfastfamily history site and hadn't done that search before- it looks very much like my Alice! Thank you ever so much. You've made my day! I'll investigate further into your other ideas- fascinating.

The Mooney's she's boarding with are probably aunts and in 1901 her husband could have been living in Scotland or else trying to get them a home in Belfast... Can't thank you enough!

I don't recognise the name, however it's interesting that there are Magee's in Lanarkshire- due to the fact that Alice and James lived in Lanarkshire for roughly 4-5 years... i'm intruiged. Thank you for this! I'll keep studying it to see if i can come up with any links
