Hi.
       My Great Uncle Henry Spendiff died on the 14 march 1922 at Market Buildings Fordsburg Johannesburg, he was a miner and a communist. I already have his death notice,a copy of his will and other paperwork relating to his wife and children. I am interested in finding out where he was buried. I have read an article which said that all the miners killed during this period ended up in a mass grave then I came across an article on the South African communist party website(two extracts attached from the article)which suggested that may not have been the case.
I have not yet found his marriage, his wifes  name was Amy Hilda Etherton and  his first child Henry James was born in Rietfontain Germiston South Africa around 1905. Any advice or help in finding his burial place or his marriage would be appreciated.

I posted my message in 2007. Since then I have done a lot of work on Harry, but I have never seen that photo before and am astonished by it. My first reaction is: where on earth has it come from? And if you know anything more I would love to hear from you, and I would be happy to swap information if you have an interest in Harry. Is he in your family tree?

Hello John,
My mother was Henry's daughter - he had three sons and a daughter, which I guess you already know.
Betty, who I see you have been in contact with, is my cousin although I have not seen or heard from her for approximately 40yrs.
Henry came to SA with the British army during the Boer War. I have copies of various documents relaed to his military service if you are interested.

Do you know what uniform that is? He was in a number of different militias I believe.
