« on: Tuesday 16 October 07 21:21 BST (UK) »
Hello

Anyone out there know of a good program - preferably free to print out Family Trees in a variety of styles and from differring sources etc

Many thanks in anticipation

I assume you have Word and Excel on your PC? You can use that. I use Excel to get an overall look at my tree. Borrow the printer at work to print it on A3 paper!
Also, the little post it thingies are good for notes.

Or do you mean a program where you record all your family tree data, and which will then turn it into a tree automaitcally? Family Tree Maker will do that - but it's not free!

There are free ones, but I've not used one - no doubt others here have.

Hi

Word I have - is it not a mamoth job to type in all the data for the tree into Word??

I use family tree maker 11 - it is not really up to the job and prints a tree very narrow and too too too long

Yes, it is!

I have FTM 11, too - which is why I do it in Excel. Tedious to set up, but once done....

The red flags have the Census data in. Very tedious to do  ;)

Well thats one way to do it

I think I'll try and create a Template in Word as I need to add photos where possible

If you want to add photos, then Word is much better than Excel.

In the snippet I showed above, the arrows indicate a hyperlink to a branch of the family on another sheet. That cuts down the size of the tree on any one page to a manageable amount. It will also work in Word. Right click on the arrow to create a hyperlink.

Good luck!
