Scrogg's Bridge and Scrogg's Mill - completed
« on: Thursday 18 October 07 08:26 BST (UK) »
I am trying to identify people and places in an old photo album.  The middle of these 3 photos is labelled Scrogg's Bridge.  Does anyone recognise the pictures either side as being in that area?  They were taken about 1928 or 29.
My Great Great uncle, David Stewart Bell died at Scroggs Mill, Dryfesdale in 1949, so that is a possible identification for the place and people, but I would like a little more evidence to back it up.

Julie

Opps, pictures are really wide - sorry, needs a lot of scrolling across to see all 3.

This picture and the top 1st picture are of the same buliding and is still in immaculate condition.  I used to live in the village of Bankshill which is approximately 5 miles from Lockerbie on the Lockerbie to Langholm road.  Scroggs Bridge is about 1.5 miles outside of Lockerbie.  Having looked at your ancestoral pictures I can say that not alot has changed apart from the middle picture showing the scene of the river looking up to the bridge.  The buildings on the right would be part of the Old Mill.  As I recall when I was growing up in that area those buildings were being renovated to there former glory.  The Bridge still stands the same as do all the buildings in your pictures.  As you look at the River/Bridge picture travelling to the right over the bridge would take you to Lockerbie a small market town and to the left the very small village of Bankshill with its own little Primary School.  About 1 mile or so on the road to Bankshill is Tundergarth Church which sits just outside Tundergarth Mains which is a farm.  In November I will be visiting my parents who live in Lockerbie.  If you would like me to take some up to date photos of the Bridge, River and Buildings as they look now, I would be more than happy too.  Please let me know.

Regards JDG's hubby.
Regards,
Julie

Thanks. That would be great.  Is the building Scroggs Mill, and is the one in the middle photo, by the bridge the same building?   :)

The buildings are all seperate, but are side by side.

JDG tells me that in the library at Lockerbie there is quite a local history section, we'll have a look when we are up next month and see what we can discover. We'll also photograph the area for you, and I might get chance to do some fishing too!
