Christopher Myers
« on: Friday 19 October 07 08:22 BST (UK) »
I have found Christopher's marriage to Margaret Law on 8 April, 1820. I have also got census records for him (with varying ages and therefore birth dates). I have one record that says he was born in St. Cuthberts and another that claims he was born in Inverary, Argyllshire. It would seem his birth year was between 1786 and 1795. I have so far been unable to find that on any records. I would be very grateful if anybody could help with this as I am stuck at getting further back.

He was apparently a broker in old metals, and resided at Westport 149. He had four children that I can establish

Malcolm.
Myers - St. Cuthberts Edinburgh/Geelong Australia
Greaves Sussex/Durham
McGregor Hewith/Hebburn/Lossiemouth
Dobson Hewith/South Shields
Law - St. Cuthberts, Edinburgh
Malcolm - Lanark - Greenoch - Renfrewshire

Hi Malcolm :)

Did he die  1855 or after in Scotland and, if so, do you have a death certificate? That should give his parents names which might help track him down.

Regards

I am having trouble finding either a birth or death date. He was apparently alive in 1851 when the census was taken but that is as far as  I can get at the moment

I've got both censuses in front of me and it certainly looks the same person. I see that on the 41 he is 50 - age therefore between 50 and 54 because of census rounding - and in the 51 he is 65. This doesn't seem to far out, so a birth between  say 1786 and 1791 would be my range. I'll have a good look for him.

It appears that wife, Margaret, is dead by 1851.

Hi All,

On SP, there is a Christopher Myers born 24 Feb 1793 but born in Gretna, Dumfriesshire. Sorry to put cat among pigeons but when I searched there was only one hit between 1553 and 1854.

Tom

Modify - I just noticed that I had soundex switched on while doing this trace, done trace over again, and it is not myers or myres etc. Still searching.
Scotland - Buchanan, Thomson, Pat(t)erson, Stewart, Ritchie, Tracey
Ireland - Tracey, Conroy, Pat(t)erson.

I saw that one, Tom. It was Marrs. I've tried Wills as well  :-\

My bet is that the Inveraray birthplace from the 1851 is more likely.

Hi Gadget,

Was on Ancestry, and did a search on Myers surname, there are 4 Public trees, one of them has a Christopher Myres born 791 Edinburgh, but alas no proof. I tried to find the son John Myers but could not find it either.

It's sounds as if they took the info from the 1841 - maybe from Freecen  :-\

Could they have been non-conformist/RC?

Thank you one and all, I have established the Canadian branch of the family from the son John,  in 1848 to early 19th Century, who was born in 1824. That had me confused because of the possibility of the twins, but having found out about the rounding down of ages has clarified this.  My father who is still alive at 93, thought that the family had come from Germany originally, but his memory is not that good at times, and he was not sure of which generation it was.  I hope to be able to go to the local LDS centre later this week and maybe get some films from them to check out further.  I was looking for a Low connection for some time but the wedding documents say Law s he is very elusive also. Similarly the names are spelled Myers/Myres/Meyers to further confuse the issue.  But I will keep searching.

Cheers from Oz,

Malcolm.
