Hi Gadget, I have not been able to establish any dates of death, other than it seems Margaret may have died between 1841 and 1851 because of the information on the census. But then she may have just been absent from the house on that night. I have had similar problems with my maternal grandmother. I have been able to find her birth and wedding (I already had the original certificate for that) but other than that she did not seem to exist on any census or similar records.

Hi Malcolm

This is the big problem with pre-1855 records - there is very little information about deaths. Some burial records do exist but they are few and far between. Many people rely on Monumental Inscriptions (MIs) or Wills but I'm not sure about the availability of MIs in Edinburgh and I have checked the wills.

Sometimes there is mention in Kirk Session minutes - fee for use of a mort cloth, etc. However, for many of us we just have to assume that they died  :(

I have found one death of Christopher Myers in 1858 in Leith North.  This gives his age as 76 which would mean he had gained 11 years since the 1851 census. I am still looking, but this is the closest lead yet.

Hi Gadget, hopefully it is. I found it through scotslandpeople and have downloaded a hard copy. I am now trying to track Margaret and find her married name as the informant was listed as a son-in-law (although the name is hard to read).  The address was given as Gillons Lodge, Hill_____field. Elizabeth the other daughter arrived in Australia in September, 1858 so I don't think it was her. The registration was made on May, 1 1858.    But maybe I am getting that little bit closer.

Hi,

There is a Margaret Myers married to a William Rhind on IGI, date  15 April 1853 at South Leith, Midlothian. Father was Christopher Myres, on an extracted record.

Hi,

I have found William and Margaret Rhind and a larger family in Leeds in the 1871, 1881 and 1891 English census. Some of the childern were born in Lancashire about 1858 to 1864, but could not see them in 1861 census so far. William was a lithographic printer.

Hi Mal

Is it possible for you to scan the cert and put the portion with the son in law's name up for us to have a look at.

You can't put the whole cert up because of copyright but just the informant column would be OK.

Regards

I am having problems attaching a copy of the file. I must be doing something wrong here. I could only open the original download with Picture and Fax Viewer. I have converted it to Word but can't seem to upload to here. I will keep trying. Thanks to you both for your help so far.
