Death In Epping 1919

Kia Ora
Greetings from New Zealand

I have found a death in the March Q 1919 of 18 year old Arthur R WILLIAMS in the Epping Reg District.

I am new to Essex as a County and wonder if someone can advise me please :-\

I have an Arthur Richard Williams born 1900 Watford Herts. I have managed to trace all the rest of his family forwards except him.  His mother was a first cousin to my great gran, who emigrated from England in 1878.

My queries;
1. This lad died at an early age - might there be a newspaper report, Inquest, or funeral notice? If so where might I search ?

2. Are there any cemeteries online for this area? Or are there places I could get Cemetery lists?

3. At 18 in the March Q of 1919 might he have been at a military establishment/camp? Where would this have been located?

I am a bit stuck with this one as it's possible his parents moved from Watford, but if he was in the military I have no idea who the informant might be to identify I have the correct person, even if I buy the Certificate.

Grateful for any advice!
Marlene

I would buy the cert -

that will answer at least two of your questions, rather than just surmising.

It will say cause of death, and whether there was an inquest or not. If the casue of death was something fairly routine, then there is unlikely to be a newspaper article.

It will give his address at death, and if he was on military service at the time it will probably give more info like his rank, no, etc.

As to cementeries, I am not knowledgeable of the area, but "Epping registration District" will cover wuite a wide area, which will probably include lots of cemeteries. Death cert will narrow down place of death. But then - if he was away from family his body could have been taken back home for burial. Or he could have been cremated.

Thanks Liz
That confirms my worst fears! Unless his 2nd name was confirmed I might never know if I have the right one! It's not exactly an uncommon name!

I wonder if the area has a full list of burials like some Councils do?

Thanks again
Marlene

Thinking laterally has solved many a puzzle for me being so far away in time & distance and sheer numbers of descendants! I always get the Certs when I have another source to verify that I am on track.

Can anyone else help please? I'm more than happy to write to institutions or establishments or whatever to establish I have the correct person.
Thanks
Marlene

Hi dale

you could check the national archives online to see if he was awarded any medals.

also you might want to check www.gazettes-online.co.uk

they have a lot of info on this site you may just strike lucky. I'd try the London Gazette. You will want the archives section hun.
