Margaret Whitwell (b. 1872)
« on: Saturday 20 October 07 12:46 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find more details about Margarets Mother Elizabeth. I'm not exactly sure where Margaret was born in Westmorland, and her Fathers name was John born in 1833 in Heversham. He married Elizabeth in 1856 and she was born in 1837. Thats all i have to go on i'm afraid.
I would be grateful for any help with this. Thanks, Erica.

Hi Eric

Margrets mother appears to be Elizabeth Addison b 1837 in Stainton, in 1841 she is living with her parents Joseph aged 30 and Elizabeth aged 30 on her grandfathers farm Stainton Bridge. Her grandfather is shown as being 70 years old and is Thomas Addison, also present appear to be her uncle Edward Addison aged 35, there are also 2 younger Addisons Thomas aged 15 and Nathan aged 12 as relationships are not iven on q1841 I am not sure of their relationship.  Margaret Whitwell was born in 1872 in Stainton. Her birth was registered in the June quarter of 1872 and the reference is Kendal 10b 682.

Do you have earlier census?

I have found John/Elizabeth 1861-1881 Elizabeth gives p.o.b. as Stainton in 1861, Haversham in 1881

This is a possiblity for her 1841/51 -(1851 very difficult to read in parts)

1851
Stainton
Westmorland
address Village Bridgend
Thomas Addison Head W 81 farmer of 70 acres employing 1lab Bolton Westmorland
Joseph Addison son W 40 Farmer's son Carlton ??a Fale? Lancs
Edward Addison son U 22 ?M???trar Westmorland
Elizabeth Addison granddaughter 14 Stainton Westmorland
MaryAddison granddaughter 10 Stainton Westmorland
also 2 servants
HO107 2442 528 22

Were Elizabeth and mary the daughters of widowed Joseph

look a possibility from 1841

1841
Stainton Westmorland
Thomas Addison 70 farmer No
Joseph 30 No
Elizabeth 30 yes
Elizabeth 4 yes
Edward 35 No
Thomas 15 ag lab Yes
Nathan 12 ag lab yes
Jane Dixon 25 F.S. no
HO107 1159 42

So it looks like Elizabeth could be the daughter of Joseph/Elizabeth???

Hope this helps

Maybe a post asking for baptisms for Elizabeth and mary may help
