Albert J Laing - Paisley
« on: Saturday 20 October 07 23:50 BST (UK) »
Please help - tearing my hair out here!!   ::)

I've been doing a bit of research for my sister in law and discovered that her great great grandfather was Albert J (probably James) Laing.
He married Ann in London (we think - can't find the marriage) had a couple of children in Kentish Town and then moved up to Hull, East Yorkshire where he had the rest of his family. By profession, he was a marble carver/mason.

According to the census - he was born in Paisley, and he would have been born about 1844 (48 on the 1891 census, born Paisley, Scotland; 37 on the 1881 census, born Scotland). The 1881 census gives him and his son completely the wrong names, but I'm as sure as I can be that it's the right family from the other details.

I can't find Albert J's birth on Scotlands People or the IGI.

Can anyone help?   :-\

Hi Ann. Yes, I wondered about that. My sister in law doesn't think they were RC but - as you suggest - I suppose that doesn't mean they were necessarily Church of Scotland. Infact, although I'm pretty sure he married in London, I can't find the marriage either - so perhaps he/they did belong to another church! Curses!

This is what always bugs me about doing Scottish research (I have Scottish ancestors as well). The books etc always go on about how much easier it is because their records have more information. All well and good if your people were CoS - if not, forget it!!

Moan over    :-X - any ideas where else to look?

I think best bet is to get in touch with National Archives Scotland cos they have some non conform church records.

Worth a go!
