They were Percy James Best born 1903  & Minnie Mable Lucy Best born 1911  (What a name)
I also think I remember my Father talking about a sister named Glady's but I am not too sure.
My Father died when I was fourteen & my Mother never said much about his family to us.

I sent a reply but I think that it has got lost.

I was saying thankyou for finding my Grandfather on the 1901 Census & asking if his place of birth was Bristol ?

Also the 1881 Census looks interesting as the names are there. But I think that Mabel born 1877/8 would be on the census as well, though she could have been elswhere on the night it was taken.

It cannot be Alice because the birth year is four years apart.
Mabel was aged 79 ,as per her Death Certificate in 1956 ,when she died . Which would make her aged about four in 1881 and Alice is aged eight in 1881.

I have also been busy trying to find John James Best born in Bristol on the  Ancestry web site & still he eludes me.

Hi Linda

Who was the person who registered her death?? ...sometimes dates can be off by a few years and the fact that there is no birth registration for her as Mabel Alice is quite strange ... there are, howeve,r birth reg, for a few Alice Kempshall ...hopefully someone else can see what we can't .... :-\

I think the important  info that we need is the marriage between these two ...that would at least give us fathers names for both and their occupations .... I wonder if Mabel Alice was in the Plymouth / devonport area when he was a patient.?  ...maybe a nurse  ::)

I have looked on the National Archives site to see if I can find John James Best medal card with no luck... I think if you post his info on the Military Board here there may be someone who can find it ...that would give his whole record ... I wonder what had happened to him that he was a patient in 1901 ...the only war I can think of at that time was the Boer war ....

I will continue to look around ... good luck on the military Boards ...the people there are fab ... and you have a lot of info to give them ...

Hi,
I have looked at her Death Certificate & found that my Mother (who would have been her daughter-in-law) registered her Death.
Also My Grandmother registered my Uncle Percy's death in 1937 and signed it  M.Best.

On my Fathers Birth Certificate in 1904 my Grandmother was registered as his Mother with the name "Mabel Best formerly Kempshall", which is where we found her name from.

I have been thinking & wonder if maybe she was married before & "Kempshall" was her married name & not her original maiden name.

I have been told that the regiment that my Father was in was for Coastal Defence so I don't think that he would have been away at War.

                    Regards
                    Linda
