Birth

My Gt Grandmother Mary Ann Wootton was born in 1867 in Meppershall.  Her Mother was called Eliza, she had a brother James and I have found his birth and a sister Elizabeth and I have also found her birth on the BMD but I cannot find Mary Ann. I have looked between 1862 and 1870 on the BMD.  Would her birth have to have been registered and where can I go from here?  Any suggestions would be welcome.

Although it was not law until around the 1870's if her siblings are registered I would think she should be.

I assume you have checked the complete index's not just the FBMD

Have you looked under Ann or  Marianne,  that is often confused with Mary Ann.

Is it the Mary Ann Wootton christened at Clifton on 12 Nov 1875, only her mother Eliza Wootton is shown on the IGI.  On the same day is christened Elizabeth Wootton.

I really don't know.  I have a copy of her marriage certificate, she married in Jun 1897 and her age is stated as 30, hence I arrived at 1867 as her birth year.

I have only looked under the name Mary Ann, maybe I should look under other forms of christian names.

Looks as though Eliza had three illegitimate children. If you get her marriage cert to James Dilley it should confirm that she was a spinster, and give her father's name

I've just trawled though full Birth Index for 1867, 1868 & 1869 & cannot find a Mary Ann Wootton listed (+ the Wooten, Wooton, Wootten derivatives) There are Mary Ann Woottons registered elsewhere & other Woottons registered for Biggleswade (which is where I would expect her to have been done).
