Would anyone know anything of White Lee Toll House Inn, which would be around 1853 in Bellingham.  A Robert Minto was innkeeper there.

Glennells,

I don't know whether you are mainly interested in the Inn or the Innkeeper.

Whellans Trade Directory for Northumberland, 1855 shows a Robert Minto to be at the BLUE BELL Inn, Byker, Newcastle.

And a William Minto to be at The NEWCASTLE ARMS, Tynemouth (or North Shields).

Several inns in Bellingham in this era, but none called White Lee Toll House.

Many old trade directories (for all-England) online at
www.historicaldirectories.org

Many old trade directories ( for just county of Northumberland) online at
communities.northumberland.gov.uk

(also includes a-z of towns, villages, including Bellingham)

That is very interesting Michael.  I got the name from a birth certificate and Robert Minto was the father.  I wonder if the Robert you found in Newcastle was the same one?  I have been able to track the family before and after their stay in Northumberland.
Thanks for the help.

Helen

Whitelee Toll Gate and Inn were in the Bellingham Registration District, but actually a few miles from Bellingham itself, just south-east of Carter Bar and in the Parish of Elsdon, Township of Troughend.

If you look at this link to Keys to the Past http://www.keystothepast.info/durhamcc/K2P.nsf/K2PDetail?readform&PRN=N14961 then click on 'location of this site on a map' you will be taken to a modern map. You can then select older maps from the menu at the bottom of the page.  There appears to have been a little settlement around what is now called Whitelee Bridge.

You will find it in the 1861 Census at RG9/ 3868/ Folio 118/ Page 10

I had a lot of fun finding that  ;D

A George Minto, innkeeper, was at Whitelee Gate in 1851. In the same household was his son Thomas who was the 'Gatekeeper'.
Would you like the full entry or have you already got it?

Hi Jen,
I would love to see the entry.  I still haven't found my way into the English way of looking up information.
cheers Helen
