Hi,

The 1871 Census has him living at 27 Marshes Road, Newport, Monmouthshire with his wife Ann & son(?) Francis.

I need to link William back to his family.

Any information would be grealy appreciated please. TIA.

Hi CatOne,

Thanks for that.

Given all the rounding of ages William could have lost a few years.

Can you post his details and any others you find please?

Best wishes

Hi CatOne,

Many thanks for that.

I have that family in my database but it does not appear th be the one I am looking for.

Rechecking my database I have a William Rossiter born 1832 but he's from Middlezoy though as well as a son called Jesse born 1857 in Middlezoy he also has a son called Francis born 1863 in Newport.

Wonder if he's the one I should be chasing?

Best wishes

Hi CatOne,

Not sure of the source but his parents are John born circa 1806 and Mary circa 1796. Both born in Middlezoy.

William married Mary A. ( maiden name unknown) somewhere around 1855 but not sure where.

I suspect that the A is for Ann and that in later censuses she may be recorded as Ann.

Best wishes

Is your William in Newport in 1871, the same one in 1881 listed as unmarried with his mum Caroline and her son Frank age 17?? 56 Marshes Road, Newport RG11/5261 Folio 15 Page 23

Hi CatOne,

Unfortunately that's what I'm not clear about.

Caroline is the widow of John Rossiter ( born circa 1819). I suspect that William born 1832 in Middlezoy could be his brother.

Caroline married a William Rossiter in the December Qtr of 1881 but who he is I do not know as I have no details about him.

William born circa 1840 ( a labourer in an Ironworks in the 1881 Census) is Caroline's son as far as I know.

Again as far as I know there are two Franks. One is the son of William born 1832 and his wife (Mary) Anne. He was born circa 1863. Caroline's son Frank was born 1864.

In the 1871 Census at 52 Marshes Road there is a William Rossiter born circa 1850 who is the son of a William Rossiter & Susan Davi(e)s. William the father died in the Sept Qtr of 1849 leaving his wife pregnant to give birth  to William Junior in 1850. This family may or may not be related.

All these Williams make it extremely complicated to sort out who is linked to whom.

Hope this helps.

best wishes
